Is Filtered Water Good for Gut Health?

Is Filtered Water Good for Gut Health?

If you’ve spent any time scrolling through health blogs or social media lately, you’ve probably read the phrase “gut health” more times than you can count. But beyond trendy supplements and diet culture, what does “gut health” actually mean, and where does something as simple as drinking filtered water fit into the bigger picture?

What is gut health?

Your gastrointestinal tract (or gut) has many functions, from transporting food to converting it and processing waste. It’s home to trillions of microorganisms, known as the gut microbiome. This bacterial flora keeps it running smoothly, working to digest food, produce vitamins, support your immune system, and even influence your mood.

When your gut is happy and healthy, you may notice:

  • Better digestion
  • More consistent energy levels
  • Improved immune function
  • Healthier skin, hair and nails
  • A positive impact on your well-being

However, that delicate ecosystem can be easily disrupted, not only throwing off your gut function but also affecting other parts of your body. The balance of bacteria and good function of your gut is what we call gut health.

Water: The gut health hero

When people think about improving gut health, the focus is often on probiotics, yoghurt, or fibre-rich foods. While all of these are good choices for improved gut function, hydration plays a key role too.

The body relies on water to break down food during digestion, absorb nutrients, and expel waste efficiently. Your digestive system works best when you’re well hydrated.

On the flip side, dehydration can have a really big impact on your gut function. From constipation to tummy cramps, not drinking enough water can cause stomach irritation, bloating, discomfort, and gut microbiome imbalance.

Does drinking filtered water make a difference?

Filtered water can be a sensible choice for people looking to improve the quality of the water they drink every day. Simply drinking better-tasting water can improve water intake, helping to support your gut health. But common contaminants in tap water can impact the microbiome of your gut.

Chlorine in particular can play a big part in this. Your gut health thrives on good bacteria, and as chlorine is a disinfectant, it may disrupt the system, throwing off the delicate balance of the gut ecosystem. Your gut needs healthy bacteria, but chlorine doesn’t just kill bad bacteria but may affect the good stuff too.

Emerging research is also helping us to understand the correlation between chlorine and gut health. A 2026 randomised controlled trial published in Communications Medicine followed 197 infants for 12 months. 99 were given filtered water, whilst 98 were provided with chlorinated water. The results were fascinating, showing that those who received the chlorinated water had higher levels of microbial pathways associated with antibiotic resistance. This raises an important question around the long-term consumption of chlorinated water, and especially its implications for overall gut health.

As with the recent and ongoing studies around PFAS in water and microplastic exposure, we always recommend airing on the side of caution when it comes to protecting your family's health. This is why Doulton water filter systems work hard to reduce chlorine and other common contaminants, not only providing peace of mind for other concerns but also helping you to maintain a healthy and happy gut. Of course, filtering your water offers other health benefits, including maintaining healthy minerals such as magnesium and calcium.

Is magnesium good for gut health?

Whilst magnesium is widely claimed to support a healthy gut microbiome, the direct evidence related to this is limited. However, magnesium is proven to have an osmotic effect in the intestine. This basically means that certain types of magnesium can draw more salt to the bowel, softening stools and making bowel movements easier. So whilst magnesium may not directly increase beneficial bacteria or improve the microbiome diversity, it can still help to create a happier tummy overall.

Supporting your gut health every day

Looking after your gut doesn’t have to involve supplements or complicated routines. Small, consistent habits often have the biggest impact:

  • Eat gut-loving fruit and veg such as berries, apples and kiwis.
  • Add fermented foods where you can – Kimchi, Sauerkraut and Kefir.
  • Include plenty of fibre-rich foods in your diet.
  • Take a short walk after eating.
  • Manage stress where possible.
  • Get enough quality sleep.
  • Drink plenty of clean, filtered water.

Good every day habits work together to support a happy and healthy gut microbiome.

Ultimately, gut health is about balance, consistency, and giving your body what it needs to function at its best. While filtered water isn’t a miracle cure, reduced contaminants in your water supports your gut balance, and it can make staying hydrated easier by improving the taste of your drinking water.

Combined with healthy lifestyle habits, drinking enough clean water is a simple yet effective step towards supporting your digestive health.
