FAQs
About Water Filters
Doulton water filters are ceramic water filters with an activated carbon core. Each filter is compatible with our Doulton under sink and tap-mounted countertop water filter systems. Designed to improve the taste and quality of your tap water, they work by using a natural ceramic material (that acts almost like a sieve) to reduce common contaminants in your drinking water supply, whilst an internal activated carbon core acts like a sponge to further reduce the effects of contaminants in your drinking water. Doulton ceramic water filters also preserve essential minerals that your body needs, leading to healthier, cleaner water for you and your home.
Doulton water filters use natural ceramic technology to remove bacteria, cysts, sediment, and other contaminants without chemicals or electricity. They combine ceramic and activated carbon to improve both quality and taste of drinking water. As the pioneers of water filtration since 1826, the products are still Made in Britain in a manufacturing facility in Staffordshire and frequently go through rigorous internal and external testing to ensure exceptional standards for households around the world. With Doulton you can rest-assured that not only are their products effective, but they also have a UK based customer service team on-hand to help with any questions, queries and guidance.
In the UK our tap water goes through rigorous testing and regulations to provide consistent safety and quality for homes. Therefore, most UK houses would find a Doulton water filter system suitable for their tap water. If you are based in another country, your tap water should still be suitable. As there are many different types of water filters available from Doulton, to suit most contaminant concerns, you may want to choose your solution based on these concerns. If you require any help or guidance please contact the Doulton customer service team at filtersales@doulton.com
Doulton water filters are designed for use with cold or room-temperature water. Using hot water can damage the ceramic filter and reduce its effectiveness. Always ensure the water you are filtering is within
the recommended temperature range specified in your product manual.
Ceramic Filters & Maintenance
The lifespan of a Doulton ceramic filter candle can vary based on usage and water quality, but typically, a filter can last up to 6 months with regular use. To maximise the lifespan, clean the filter regularly and replace it when you notice a decline in performance or after the recommended time period.
The frequency of replacing your ceramic filter candle depends on your water usage and the quality of your tap water. As a general guideline:
- For average use, replace the filter every 6 months.
If you notice a drop in water flow or a change in taste, it may be time to replace the filter. Check the product manual for specific recommendations for your filter model.
Yes, the filter candle can be cleaned within it's recommended lifespan to restore it's flow.
To clean:
- Gently scrub the surface of the ceramic filter under running water using a soft brush or sponge.
- Avoid using any detergents or soap as they can damage the filter.
Regular cleaning helps maintain optimal water flow and filtration performance.
Check the product manual for specific recommendations for your filter model.

If your filtered water has an unusual taste or smell, it may be due to:
- The ceramic filter candle needing cleaning or replacing.
- A build-up of contaminants in the filter.
- Water quality issues in your local supply.
Ensure that the filter has been flushed properly before use, especially after a replacement. If the issue continues after cleaning or replacing the filter, please reach out to our customer support through the online chat for further assistance. You can also email us at filtersales@doulton.com.
If you are looking to specifically target fluoride in your drinking water, the best solution from the Doulton Water Filter range would be a DUO or TRIO under sink system with a fluoride reduction cartridge.
If you are looking for a gravity filter system, the British Berkefeld Ultra Fluoride system would be the best solution. British Berkefeld is part of the Doulton family of brands, so you can rest-assured that you will experience the same quality and exceptional standards expected from the Doulton water filters company.
If you accidentally drop your ceramic filter candle, inspect it carefully for any cracks or damage. Even small cracks can affect the filter’s performance and could allow contaminants to pass through. If you notice any damage, it is recommended to replace the filter candle to ensure your water remains safe and clean.

Doulton water filters are made from an external layer of natural ceramic materials which acts as a blocker for a range of contaminants. Inside the filters is an activated carbon core, which works hard to add an extra layer of filtering to your drinking water. The ceramic is made from a mixture that has been refined through generations to provide the most advanced levels of safe water filtration for your needs.
If a Doulton ceramic filter candle has been stored in a cool, dry place, it can generally be reused.
Before reusing:
- Inspect the filter for any signs of damage or cracking.
- Flush the filter thoroughly with clean water to remove any dust or particles.
- Ensure the filter is clean and dry before installing it in your system.
If in doubt, it is always safest to replace the filter with a new one. Click here to locate the replacement filter you need.

Whenever you install a new ceramic water filter from the Doulton Water Filter range, we recommend following the set-up and conditioning process outlined in the associated instructions. As an overview, Doulton water filters that are installed into an under sink or tap-mounted countertop system need to allow water to run for 10 minutes upon initial set up, then the filter needs to be left for 24 hours before running the water again for a further 10 minutes.
For British Berkefeld systems and filters, you will be also be required to perform a conditioning process during set-up, or when installing replacement filters.
Please refer to the product instructions for your product to find out more.
The flow rate of Doulton® water filters vary depending on the model and the water pressure. On average, the flow rate is around 1-3 litres per minute. If you experience a significant reduction in flow rate, it may be time to clean or replace the ceramic filter candle.

If your filtered tap water appears cloudy, it may be due to:
- Air bubbles trapped in the water, especially after first use or filter replacement. This is harmless and should clear up after running the water for a few minutes.
- A build-up of particulates in the filter, which may indicate it’s time to clean or replace the ceramic filter candle.
- Ensure the filter is properly installed and that all seals are tight.

In Doulton and British Berkefeld systems and filters, the seals/gaskets are made from high quality, food grade synthetic rubbers such as silicone, NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber), nitrile, and EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer). These materials are carefully chosen because they are the best solution for our products, they are in contact with the drinking water and should not naturally contain latex.
However, it’s important to share that these seals are produced in manufacturing environments where natural rubber may also be handled. Because of this, there is a small possibility that trace amounts of latex could be present.
For our British Berkefeld Stainless Steel Gravity Filters, the rubber feet on our stands, and the anti-slip base on outside of the gravity units are made from natural rubber but the material is not in contact with the drinking water.
We want you to have the clearest picture possible so you can make the choices that feel right for you and your household. So, if you ever have questions about materials, safety, or suitability please reach out directly to filtersales@doulton.com
