Drink Water Free From Herbicides & Filter Out...
While science developments have helped to revolutionise farming, the use of herbicides - and more importantly how it trickles into our water supply - is a serious cause for concern. Herbicides have been applied to crops across the world since being developed in the 1940s. Sprayed onto crops to kill weeds without damaging the product, these chemicals can embed themselves into the soil-bed and inadvertently find their way into drinking water. Check out our water solutions now! Health Concerns of herbicides and pesticides A report being presented this week highlights this risk of the unknown in the use of pesticides (including herbicides) that have been linked to serious health concerns. The report points to the fact that pesticides have been linked with conditions ranging from skin rashes to Alzheimer's Disease, cancer, and neurological conditions. And it reports: "Pesticides also present a serious threat to drinking water, particularly in agricultural areas, which often depend on groundwater" Strict regulations are already in place in the United Kingdom governing the use of herbicides to control weeds on land near to waterways, and the EU has been a leader in taking precautionary action over the use of pesticides. Fear of the unknown However, a risk remains that some toxins could find their way into the water system through water run-off from fields in the event of heavy rain, or by being disrupted by wind. Such is the concern about what possible effects these chemicals could have on the water supply system that the Environment Agency has strict guidelines in place governing their use near to a waterway. In the developed world checks are in place that any possible contamination is limited, however, there is still scope for a small amount of herbicide to find its way into the water ways. Despite herbicides being given rigorous testing, the widespread use is still a cause for concern when the associated health and environmental risks remain unknown. How to remove herbicides and pesticides from water Take action - Drink water free of herbicides So, how do we protect ourselves from the unknown? Investing in a water filter is an obvious place to start. Doulton Water Filters harness natural materials to filter out chemicals that could be present in drinking water. As nutritionist Jenny Tschiesche recently warned in her influential Lunchbox Doctor blog: "Any filter is better than no filter. If you don't have a filter you become the filter." Concerned about the possible chemical content in drinking water she invested in one of Doulton's Stainless Steel Outdoor Recreation filters, which can be used on the go. Describing the filter as â"one of the best purchases we have made", Jenny wrote: "The best and most cost-effective solution is a combination of a decent water filter at home. I highly recommend Doulton Gravity Filters and a really good quality glass or stainless steel reusable drinking bottle...this method of obtaining clean, chlorine-free water without particles or pathogens is more cost efficient than a filter jug and is far more environmentally friendly than bottled water." Play it safe Strict maximum levels for pesticide content in drinking water have been put in place under the European Drinking Water Directive but while such widespread use of pesticides remains so does the risk that the toxins might enter the water system. Leading policy-makers believes it is time to take steps to minimise the risks of toxins to the eco system. Keep your family safe from the risks of the unknown and filter out the toxins from your drinking water by using a water filter. Check out our water solutions now!
Learn moreGreat! You've Purchased A Water Filter From An...
This won't be the first time we've raised the subject, and we make no apologies for it, but counterfeit, copy and non-genuine products are readily available in the marketplace and we need to talk about it - you need to know you have purchased a genuine water filter. You may already be well aware that the crime of counterfeiting is not new, in fact more and more counterfeit items are now being sold online as well as through retailers, and spotting copies has become almost impossible. The need for you to ensure your purchase is a genuine product from the original manufacturer, official master distributor or reseller is paramount, not only for your own peace of mind, but for that of the copyright holder too. Check out our water solutions now! Counterfeit products - who loses out? It's a true but disappointing fact that sub-standard and incomplete products that purport to be the genuine article have become an absolute nightmare for buyer and (genuine) seller alike. Manufacturers seek to secure legitimate retailers and online outlets for the promotion and sale of their products, however with online platforms now becoming the norm, more and more problems are coming to light. First of all, the customer loses out. Disappointed with a shoddy, poorly performing or deficient product, they're unlikely to have received any sort of guarantee that actually has a backbone, along with a negligible chance of getting their money back. Secondly, the original manufacturer whose product has been plagiarised is swamped with customer complaints about inferior products. Now faced with multiple grievances, they get held accountable for purchases made by unsuspecting buyers from highly questionable sellers and everyone's time and money fizzles away in to a black hole. Counterfeit goods and safety Did you know that there are serious risks involved with buying counterfeit goods? Fake goods, copies, knock-offs (whatever label you wish to apply to them) are often of a poor quality and in most cases unsafe. It's a question as to whether any of them have been subjected to the same vigorous safety checks as legitimate items. Plus, so many under-perform or are just downright dangerous. How to tell if your Doulton product is a genuine water filter First of all, trust your instincts. As the old saying goes: if an offer looks too good to be true, then it probably is. Legitimate, expertly manufactured goods are rarely discounted so don't be taken in. Secondly, check the details. Fraudsters cut corners on things like accurate copywriting and proofreading when marketing their items. They also make logos, branding or web addresses look similar to the original manufacturer. And, as an add-on to that, just because the web address contains "co.uk" don't assume the seller is based in the UK. Look for their UK address and contact number - they won't mind you contacting them if they are the genuine article. Thirdly, and probably most importantly, do they offer any authentication methods? Look for their product registration page, guarantee or warranty details, or any area where you can double check that what you're buying is genuine. Here at Doulton, we have an Authentication Centre where you can register and also enter unique identification numbers, which quickly authenticate your purchases. Have faith in what you buy and beat the rogue traders who want to take your money and leave you high and dry with a useless or even dangerous product. Counterfeiters and counterfeit products are an ever-increasing problem for everyone. Are you prepared to beat them at their own game? Doulton Water Filter products - safe, efficient & and genuine! Learn moreCut Waste & Help Millions Get Access To...
This week sees World Water Day take place and with each year the message resonates further - just how important this precious resource is to each and every one of us. It is unthinkable that in the 21st century there are millions of families who do not have access to clean drinking water. A staggering 663 million people still do not have access to a clean water supply. Children are dying after drinking contaminated water that has made them ill. Tragically, unsafe water and poor sanitation is estimated to cause 842,000 deaths every year. Water filters have proved vital in the battle to tackle this problem. The problem of wastewater Yet, in the face of this, wastewater remains a problem. By focusing on the problem this year's World Water Day hopes to shine a spotlight on this tragic reality that while so many go without, so much is still wasted. It is the developing countries worst affected by a lack of clean drinking water that also fail to channel their wastewater for another purpose where it could be used to cut costs, boost productions and ultimately help towards the costs of an infrastructure to support a more sanitary drinking water supply. Check out our Gravity Filter solutions now! So integral is the problem of wastewater that halving the amount left untreated is part of a United Nations Sustainable Development Goal to improve drinking water for all by 2030. As charities and agencies struggle to work towards a solution to the problem of sanitary infrastructures and the provision of clean drinking water, filters remain key to their work. Doulton's ceramic water filters use natural materials to cleanse contaminated drinking water, removing harmful contaminants. With families left with no option but to share unsafe water sources with animals, water filters really do help to save lives. A vital role for water filters In communities where fuel costs prove prohibitive to boiling water to remove impurities, water filters can be used instantly and without an ongoing daily cost. British Berkefeld® Water Filters are used in "˜Cleanwater kits", that have been sent out to communities in dire need of clean water in the wake of a humanitarian crisis. Cleanwater kits can be used on the go and will filter particles and pathogens out of almost any fresh water source. Already British Berkefeld® water filters have been introduced to households in rural South Africa and Zimbabwe by Aquapol in a bid to cut dysentery caused by drinking unsafe water. The rate of contagion fell by 80%, boosting adults' ability to work and, vitally, children's school attendance. Again, in Uganda, where fuel shortages made it difficult to boil impurities from water, communities were given Cleanwater kits to ensure they had access to clean drinking water. Projects such as these remain a lifeline to communities trapped in a cycle where a poor infrastructure to deal with wastewater is combined with a desperate need for clean drinking water. Wasting a precious resource The message this World Water Day is that wastewater is being neglected as an affordable source of water, energy and nutrients. It is hoped that in the long-term, rather than being disposed of, wastewater will be seen as a resource with a central role in bringing sanitary infrastructures to those in need. While the resources to install the systems needed to properly treat wastewater remain out of reach, water filters will continue to be a lifeline to families where clean drinking water sadly remains a precious luxury. Learn moreThe Importance of Healthy Drinking Water
We're all aware that certain parts of the world suffer daily from drought and starvation issues. But living in modernised society you inevitably become commoditised to having an easily accessible drinking water supply. And it is, accessible that is. But is your accessible water supply healthy? Check out our water solutions now! Just because we are fortunate enough to turn a tap on and off just like that, to pour a clear glass of water, fill the kettle or wash the Sunday-roast veggies, it doesn't mean that the water is free from contaminants. And this is something a recent advocate of ours discovered in her journey for optimal nutrition for health and performance. "I started to investigate what our water contained within it. I appreciate that our water is way healthier than it was in the past and also than it is in other poorer countries but that's a relative concept. Is it actually what I want my kids and my husband and I to be drinking?' Read more here. Jenny Tschiesche is a nutritional expert and successful founder of The lunch Box Doctor. In her latest blog, she raises some important points about how certain health risks are caused by exposure to contaminated water supplies. In particular, she discusses the effects of chlorine, pesticides and herbicides. Knowing what's in your drinking water supply Chemicals are added to our water supply on purpose through used-water treatment processes in order to clean it sufficiently before releasing it back into the drinking water supply. Yet contaminants can also enter our waterways through old pipework and the outdoor environment after it's been chemically treated. And who's to say we know what these chemicals are doing in the first place? The only way to be 100 percent sure that your drinking water is healthy (for you and your family), is to understand, first of all, what's in your water supply and how to combat any possible contaminants. Only at this point will you be able to determine the correct water filter and additional pre-filters suitable to your needs. Another spanner in the water works (excuse the pun) is the ongoing debate between bottled water and tap water. "I also started to think about the amount of water we all now drink from plastic bottles. Firstly plastic bottles are not sustainable, no matter what we are told. They have a large carbon footprint and what you drink in 10 minutes can hang around for 1000 years!" As Jenny points out, bottled water isn't necessarily the answer for the environment. Nor is it necessarily the answer for our own bodies. Jenny's journey to find answers brought her to Doulton Water Filters and she's never looked back. Jenny has since become a great advocate in sharing the message we're trying to spread about taking charge of your water supply and enjoying healthier, great tasting water. The importance of healthy drinking water It's important to understand what's in your drinking water and how you can invest in ways to make healthier changes. Changes that work for you. Learn moreIs It Better To Boil Or Steam When...
Using water for cooking has been a familiar activity for a long time, but the debate rages on as to whether steaming vegetables rather than boiling them has any advantages. Health experts claim that steaming is better, but whatever the preference, very little (if anything) is ever said about the water itself and the benefits that are gained by using filtered water for cooking. Check out our water solutions now! How it works It's all pretty straight forward. Boiling takes time and vegetables are simply boiled in water until sufficiently cooked to a preferred level of tenderness. Steamed vegetables are cooked in a basket or vented container where they are not in the water, but are instead sitting above the pan of boiling water and are cooked by steam. Steamers can perform the same operation. Microwaving food is a further method but is somewhat quicker. Vegetables are placed in a container with a very small amount of water and covered with a vented lid. Steam is quickly produced which part steams the food and the microwave action on the moisture content in the food does the rest. Why is steaming better than boiling? The healthy cooking debate Steaming is better. So says many a health expert. Many of the nutrients in vegetables leach into water when boiled. The longer the vegetables are cooked, the more nutritional value is lost. This statement is generally accepted. No problem there. But what about the water? Have you ever noticed the water line inside the pan when you've boiled water? The pan should be clean, but there's often a line, like a tidemark, visible when the water is poured away. This is what's left as a result of evaporation and it's often limescale. Particles of calcium and other minerals are left behind, and they're not just on the pan, they're deposited on the vegetables too. Cooking them quickly and in a small amount of water in the microwave can help to not only preserve some of their water-soluble vitamins, but less water contains fewer deposits. It's widely accepted that vegetables that have been steamed aren't just more nutritious than those that have been boiled, but they also taste better. A blind taste test showed that people prefer the taste, texture and flavour of vegetables that have been steamed over those that have been boiled (Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, February 2010). Why? Because they've been above the water and not in it. Filtered water for cooking. Water forms an important part of the cooking equation, but it's rarely considered. Whether the preferred method is boiling, steaming, or microwaving, you not only want your food to look and taste good, but you want to know it's healthy and free from contaminants. Tidemarks around saucepans indicate that the water wasn't as clear as you first thought. And any impurities still have easy access to being digested by your family. Filtered water isn't just for drinking. It's integrated into our cooking and our meals in tasty sauces and gravy, pasta and rice dishes, together with a whole host of other appetising recipes. Why choose and use great ingredients yet take water quality for granted? Don't compromise when it comes to cooking with water; use great-tasting, healthy, filtered water - you won't regret it. Learn moreWater and Brain Function: How Can Drinking Water...
Water and brain function are intimately linked. Think back to the last time you went for a few hours without water - perhaps on a hot day. How did you feel? You might have noted a headache, dizziness or faintness. You might've had a hard time concentrating or even felt irritable. Then, remember that immense relief as you gulp a glass of refreshing water. That's your body's way of telling you just how important hydration is. The benefits of drinking water for our general health are almost innumerable. Whether it's for exercise, helping with digestion or flushing out toxins, H2O is our fuel and the bedrock of our wellbeing. Every function of our body is dependent on water; this includes the brain, which is approximately 75 percent water. When this organ is dehydrated, a number of undesirable outcomes can follow that we often don't stop to consider. Indeed, a brain that needs water performs worse in almost every way. Concentration, memory and critical thinking are drastically affected. For peak function, your brain needs an optimal and consistent supply of healthy water. Let's explore just how crucial water is for our brain's vitality and function. Check out our water solutions now! Water and cognitive function: How does water help the brain? How can drinking water help concentration? Water is a part of our body's means of transporting essential nutrients to all the places that need them. Water aids our brain's function and concentration by giving it the electrical energy it needs to perform optimally. It also flushes out toxins. Our body has an incredible, hard-working transportation network. This delivers hormones, elements and chemicals that are crucial for our nervous system - all suspended in water. Water hydrates our blood, getting everything moving around our body perfectly. Our brain doesn't have a storage tank, so for optimal function it needs to be fuelled regularly. When the body is fully and consistently hydrated, this exchange of nutrients and toxins to and from our brains is highly efficient. The result? Better concentration, greater mental alertness, improved memory as well as a more balanced mood. A hydrated brain can be more creative, think with more clarity and make decisions faster. By the same token, when the body is dehydrated, its transportation network works less efficiently; our sodium and electrolyte levels drop. This shortfall in water supply to the brain results in symptoms including problems with focus, memory and concentration. You'll be prone to experiencing headaches, brain fatigue, sleep problems and a low mood. Dehydration and cognitive function: The research It's not just a myth that "a drink helps you think” it's backed up by scientific research, and plenty of it. In one study, people were found to have faster reaction time if they drank 500ml of water shortly before taking a reaction test. In another, adults reported a poorer performance on a visual vigilance task even if they were only mildly dehydrated, also adjudging themselves as more anxious and fatigued. The dehydrated participants also reported worse memory. Research found that mild dehydration in women (1.36%) resulted in "a degraded mood, increased perception of task difficulty, lower concentration, and headache symptoms". In 2018, a study proved that dehydration "impairs cognitive performance, particularly for tasks involving attention, executive function, and motor coordination". Our brain's mass is three-quarters water, so when we're dehydrated, its ability to function is impeded. Water makes the transportation of nutrients to our brain more efficient, resulting in greater cognition. The benefits of drinking water for the brain: Older and younger people Hydration is essential to fuel our brains for optimum function, but it does take on added significance for the elderly and the young. The benefits for youngsters The risk of dehydration and its damaging effects on brain function hit the very young amongst us hard. Young children and toddlers either aren't able to quench their own thirst or can forget to do so, placing them at more risk of dehydration. Of course, youngsters still need to concentrate. In fact, concentration amongst kids is probably as important as with adults! Children need to learn, stay focused and follow instructions at school; as such, a drink of water at regular intervals can bring great cumulative benefits to education. Instilling regular water consumption as a habit can pay dividends. Keeping water levels up when they arrive home is equally crucial. Quietly placing a glass of cool filtered water next to them as they do battle with maths homework will go a long way to helping those neurotransmitters do their work. It's not just young kids, either. Secondary, sixth form and university students all have huge demands placed on their brains; it makes perfect sense that keeping up a hydration routine helps with exams and lectures. Water is crucial for our brain function, concentration and clarity of thinking. Hydration and brain function in older people Sometimes, older people have compounding illnesses or issues which can affect brain function; add dehydration into the mix, and it can exacerbate the problem. Prolonged dehydration can cause brain cells to shrink in size and mass. There's been landmark research into dehydration in older adults as it relates to cognitive impairment. It found that lower hydration status resulted in "slowed psychomotor processing speed and poorer attention/memory performance". That's also not to mention that a lack of water is associated with an increased risk of developing types of dementia like vascular dementia, which is caused by a lack of blood flow to the brain. We've written in more depth about the relationship between water intake and dementia on our blog. Water quality and brain function Not all water is created equal. Have you ever been at a friend's house, and noted a distinct difference in the taste and smell of the tap water? This is because our water contains a number of common contaminants as part of its treatment, the most abundant and common being chlorine and fluoride. These levels vary by region. Occasionally, heavy metals can also leach into your water supply on its way from the treatment plant. The main offenders are lead and aluminium; some areas of the UK struggle with higher heavy metal content than others. Crucially, a prolonged exposure to drinking water with heavy metal content has been implicated in causing dementia, the awful symptoms of which we're probably all aware of - forgetfulness, poorer judgement and overall reduced brain function. So, yes, the quality of your water can affect your brain, your ability to concentrate and your cognition. Although the UK has some of the finest water in the world, you can safeguard against potentially harmful contaminants by filtering your water with a ceramic water filtration system. Make the change with Doulton® Make hydration a priority in your life, for all the incredible benefits it brings to your brain - a balanced mood, more creativity, sharper thinking and better concentration. Learn moreFakes, Copies & Counterfeits - Is My Doulton...
They're out there. In every town, county and country; they're definitely out there. And they're taking money from customers' pockets and from genuine hard-working companies whose products they imitate. They are counterfeits. To counterfeit means to imitate something. Imitation products are unauthorised replicas of the real product; a fake item that has been produced with the intention of taking advantage of the superior value of the imitated product. Absolutely anything can be copied nowadays and the results are startling. From forgeries of currency and documents through to pharmaceuticals, car parts, toys, watches and works of art. You name it and it can almost certainly be copied. The illegal production of fake, bootleg, pirate or counterfeit goods is not a victimless crime. Manufacturers lose billions of pounds worth of income every year and disturbingly, many counterfeit consumer products have a reputation for being lower in quality (sometimes not working at all) and may even include toxic elements. Check out our water solutions now! Don't become a victim The spread of counterfeit goods has become global in recent years and the range of goods subject to being unlawfully copied and sold on the cheap has increased significantly. Despite the Trading Standards Departments (and their counterparts across the world) constantly shutting down websites, seizing goods and prosecuting offenders, the problem persists. Most counterfeit goods are produced and manufactured in the Far East. Unfortunately, China even has the title of "counterfeit capital of the world", closely followed by North Korea and Taiwan. One positive solution is product authentication. Authentication is vital if customers and manufacturers alike are to gain not only peace of mind, but also the benefits of high quality, genuine products. What is "Authentication"? Manufacturers are fighting back. To help distinguish originals from counterfeits, copyright holders now use methods such as the use of serial numbers and/or holograms to establish the origin of their goods; distinctive and inimitable marks and systems designed to confirm ownership and provenance. Unfortunately, the advance of technology means that quality counterfeit items are often difficult to discern from authentic goods. Being able to positively identify an item as genuine enables potential customers to gain some peace of mind; a knowledge that their money has been well spent. How are Doulton® water filter candles authenticated? We use a unique identification number on all filter candles allowing the customer to easily check that what they have bought is the genuine article. It only takes a few seconds and is so easy. On the mount of each candle, alongside the product number, is a unique serial number. Simply visit the Authentication Centre page on our website. By following the prompts and entering these numbers together, confirmation will be provided that the product is genuine. Why use Authentication? Doulton® ceramic water filtration systems are backed by stringent in-house quality control procedures. Accredited by BS EN ISO 9001 international quality standards, we also hold the coveted NSF® and WRAS certification. Our annual independent quality control audits and laboratory testing is ensures high performance in all manufacturing processes, product quality consistency and global customer service. This high quality should be protected, not only for our company, but for our customer too. Learn moreThe Hard Facts About Water
Whilst most people will have heard of the terms hard and soft water, not everyone is quite sure what they actually mean. And most people won't know what difference it makes whether they have one or the other coming into their home. Here, we'll have a quick look at what hard water is and what you can do about it should you live in an area supplied with hard water. Check out our Limescale solutions now! What is hard water? In simple terms, hard water is water that has a high mineral content when compared to soft water. When water falls as rain, it's free from any minerals and so we call this soft water. It then picks up minerals, dissolves them and holds them in solution as it passes through rock, limestone, chalk, sand and soil. Hard water is generally high in mineral salts, especially calcium and magnesium carbonates. The degree of hardness becomes greater as the calcium and magnesium content increases. Due to various rock structures and landscapes, water in different parts of the UK varies in the amount of dissolved minerals it contains, and it's this that determines whether it is hard or soft in nature. There are advantages and disadvantages to both types, but hard water in particular has the natural ability to cause a few problems, which can be a nuisance in the home and workplace. It can even cause damage to vital components. Hard water is not a health risk, in fact it's often considered to be good for health due to its calcium content. What's the problem? Water is a rather good solvent (a solvent is any substance that can dissolve another substance) and so it's able to pick up impurities very easily and hang on to them. The problem is that the very water we all need for drinking and cooking carries within it a number of mineral passengers that have been picked up on its journey through various rocks and sediments on its way to the water treatment works. It's these that get left behind and deposited in numerous places in our homes, especially around our taps and in our kettles. The deposits slowly build up, leaving a film or scaly residues and layers, and forming what we know as limescale. Hard water facts Hard water minerals can clog pipes and reduce water flow to taps Deposits of scale are unsightly on drinking water taps and outlets and can be difficult to remove Glasses used for drinking water can become white-filmed with mineral residue Hard water can affect the taste of tea, coffee and other drinks What's the answer? It depends on the scale of the problem (ooops, sorry!) and the amount of mineral deposits that are building up. If taps constantly appear crusty around the outlet, kettles get frequently "furred up", or a film can be seen on the surface of tea and coffee, then a water filter could be just what's required. A water filter removes unwanted contaminants immediately before the point of use. The outcome is a reduction in the build up of scale and mineral residue, resulting in taps and kettles remaining in a pristine condition for longer. A filter will also provide wonderfully clear, great-tasting water! If hard water is giving you a headache, find out more about how a water filter can help by clicking here to contact us.
